Polynomials are a common way to build functions and to explore mathematics. In a general sense this chapter has two parts. First, you'll practice simplifying polynomial products into sums and differences. Please pay attention to sign issues as you work through these problems. Second, you'll practice rewriting polynomial sums or differences back into polynomial products. This second skill, known as factoring, is one of the most important skills needed for success in algebra. This material is covered on pages 199-208 in the Engaging Algebra textbook.
5.1 An Introduction to Polynomials
After this material you will know the language of polynomials and be able to simplify polynomial sums and differences.
5.2 Beginning Polynomial Multiplication
When you've finished this section you'll be able to apply the distributive property correctly as the first step in simplifying polynomial products.
