1.1 An Introduction to Operations

Although Math for Liberal Arts doesn't have a lot of algebra, we'll still be dealing with operations. After completing today's lesson you'll have the vocabulary needed to discuss operations and you'll be able to correctly simplify expressions that contain more than one operation.  This material is covered in section 1.1 (pages 3-12) in our text.  Below are the videos for today's topic.

Beginning with the vocabulary of operations

Beginning the order of operations

The idea of grouping

Continuing with the vocabulary of operations

1.2 Multiplying and Dividing Integers

In our last lesson we worked with the "natural" numbers (1, 2, 3....). Over time, for several reasons, people found a need to move beyond the natural numbers and create the integers.  A natural number without a dash in front meant something “positive” (I have 6 sheep to sell), while the same number preceded by a dash meant something “negative” (when the ship sank I lost 6 sheep that I could have sold).  After this video you'll be able to multiply and divide integers.  This material is covered on pages 13-18 in our text.

Replying to my edu email (10 points)  (Begins on 1/5 and ends ASAP)

A few students immediately fall behind in math because they don't regularly check their go.minneapolis.edu email account.  Email will be an important way you and I interact.  To receive 10 points, you need to reply to the email I've sent to your go.minneapolis.edu account.  If you don’t see my email, there’s something wrong and we need to get that fixed.  Once I get your reply, I'll email you back and I'll include directions so you can finish project 1.  At that point we'll assume you're checking your edu email account at least once a day.  Please realize that if you forward your go.minneapolis.edu email to another account you may not see all your edu emails.  It's supposed to work that way, but some students have had problems when it comes to forwarded emails.
